San Diego a weekend away to revitalize.
The rain, grey and cold Seattle Winter and Spring had taken its toll, so this past weekend we packed a carry on bag and headed down to S.D for a long weekend.
Seattle, this is the place to come to if you only have a long weekend and want a fun in the sun weekend with a great gay atmosphere and friendly people.
We spent the weekend in the Hillcrest neighborhood (the Capital Hill of S.D) the area is filled with quaint shops, great restaurants and fun nightclubs all within walking distance.
Every weekend in S.D should start with a visit to the Park Manor Suites, Top of the Park Friday evening gay happy hour. Every Friday the men of S.D meet at the top of this great old hotel with an amazing rooftop bar. There are easily 300 plus men their enjoying the end of the workweek and socializing with some great cocktails. And, there is no cover charge, the drinks are quite strong, a great way to start the weekend and if you’re a visitor to meet some great locals. Definitely stay for the sunset over San Diego Bay! Then head out to Martinis above 4th on 4th for a fun dinner with live piano music and delicious well priced entrée’s and a great atmosphere. After dinner you can head out to a number of great bars all within walking distance.
This weekend we stayed at the Sommerset Suites just a block from the main Hillcrest area and a charming small boutique hotel that has everything you need for a weekend getaway to this gay part of town. A nice small swimming pool surrounded by lush gardens and the rooms are suites so each has a bedroom and living room with kitchen, a nice to have option, we used the kitchen to make cocktails as the restaurants in the area are so great and diverse we ate dinner out each evening, and the hotel has a great breakfast every morning so that was a great plus. The other hotel we recommend for your gay getaway is the Park Manor Suites as mentioned above it is also within easy walking to the Hillcrest area and a short cab to downtown. If you want to stay near the gay part of town I would recommend both of these hotels.
If you’re a hotel brand guy S.D has all the top hotel brands downtown and they are only a $10 cab ride away from the action of Hillcrest.
This weekend we did not do any of the many activities in the area we relaxed by the pool and soaked up the sun that we had not seen in Seattle in the past 6 weeks! But that does not mean S.D does not have so many wonderful attractions and activities to keep you entertained; from the best gay beach in the U.S to the San Diego Zoo and everything in between. You can fill your days with activities or just soak in the local culture, we enjoy lunch at Fiesta Cantina the cocktails are great, salads amazing and you can sit back in the open air restaurant and watch the sunny world walk by and admire the great “scenery”. S.D is just a short flight away to the sun and fun that we in Seattle so desperately need once in a while.
The S.D. bar scene is refreshing and each are fun and offer different themes and specials, in particular I recommend Moe’s, Richs and Eden. This weekend we enjoyed the monthly “Bear” party at Richs, though it is not the same as Seattle’s Bear parties these were muscular, in shape, men with a splash of leather it was a great diversity of men. What I liked was that everyone was super friendly and outgoing, the DJ’s played great music that got everyone dancing with great energy, they know how to get the boys to take their shirts off and have a fun dance night!
