New Beginnings’ mission is to provide shelter, advocacy and support for battered women and their children; and to change attitudes and social institutions that foster and perpetuate violence.

New Beginnings provides services to those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence – physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Some who use our services are in physical danger. Others are living with controlling partners in relationships that are emotionally abusive.

A variety of services are offered to help transition victims of domestic violence into survivors of domestic violence. We provide information, referrals and safety planning through our 24-hour Help Line. Our Emergency Shelter offers safe shelter, support and advocacy for women and their children escaping domestic violence. There they are provided with food, clothing, personal care items and other items someone fleeing a dangerous situation might need. Women and children staying at one of 17 furnished apartments at our Transitional Housing Program are offered individual support and advocacy through our legal advocacy, chemical dependency, parenting groups and children’s support groups. We are able to help domestic violence survivors rebuild their lives and reach their goals through these and many other services.

New Beginnings believes that it is also essential to engage the community in the second part of our mission: to change attitudes and institutions that foster and perpetuate violence. We do this through violence prevention education in Seattle middle schools, through community training, and outreach events. Much of this work is carried out in partnership with volunteers. Our social change work creates awareness around the issue of domestic violence and provides opportunities for individuals and organizations to take action to build communities free of abuse.
